Is Your Car a Breeding Ground for Bacteria?
Most drivers are unaware that the average car serves as a Petri dish for the growth of all kinds of bacteria. In fact, the interior of your car is home to as many, or more different types of bacteria as the average toilet seat.
Why? Well, the environment in your car is generally hospitable to these tiny lifeforms. Your plush upholstery, your carpet, and the dark nooks and crannies between your seats and in the air vents are great hiding places for all kinds of microscopic creatures. These bacteria and fungi can live in a wide range of temperatures, and are happy to feed on just about anything that decays. They’re far more likely to be found in older vehicles, and vehicles in which children are regularly transported. The long and short of it is that they like dirty cars, where there are moist, dark places to breed and a plethora of rotting material (crumbs and other yuck) to feed upon.
Among these microbial nasties, you might find salmonella, campylobacter, and E. coli, all of which can cause sickness and even death.
What can you do to protect yourself and your passengers?
Clean your car. Don’t leave any garbage for bacteria to feed upon. Regularly clean all surfaces with a disinfectant, and have your carpets and upholstery shampooed. Keep some disinfectant wipes on hand, and regularly wipe down the surfaces of your car that people have contact with.
Make sure your car’s cabin air filter is properly maintained. Change it according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
If you transport children or pets, clean up after them. It might be a good idea to put Fido on a blanket while he’s in the car, so you can toss it in the washing machine later. Don’t let your kids eat or drink – it’s amazing how much they will spill.
