Manitoba Car Window Tinting Regulations

If you are planning to window tint your automobile , you’ll need to know the legal restrictions here in Manitoba. Laws regarding window tinting vary from province to province in Western Canada, so it’s useful to know what limitations apply to your area.

According to the Highway Traffic Act of the C.C.S.M. (Continuing Consolidation of the Statutes of Manitoba), passenger vehicles are limited to a maximum of 45% (+/- 5%) of light transmission blockage at the front side windows. Basically the law states that at least 50% light transmission is required. For rear side windows, the restriction is set at 35%, meaning there is an allowance of an additional 10% of tinting in back side windows. For rear facing windows, there are no restrictions. In all cases, the vehicle is also required to have both left and right exterior rear-view mirrors.

These restrictions have been set forth in an effort to ensure traffic safety as well as the safety of law enforcement officers who need to be able to locate and identify drivers and passengers of vehicles through closed windows. Pedestrians and other drivers need to be able to see and make eye contact with one another when sharing the road to avoid accidents. This is the reason for the more stringent restrictions on the front side windows. Excessively tinted windows can impair drivers’ vision at night as well. Windshield tinting is limited by Manitoba law to a depth of 15 cm from the upper edge downward.

For the purposes of the law, a passenger vehicle is defined as a motor vehicle having a designated seating capacity of no more than 10 passengers, but does not include motorcycles, trucks or multipurpose vehicles.

Most drivers are unaware that the average car serves as a Petri dish for the growth of all kinds of bacteria. In fact, the interior of your car is home to as many, or more different types of bacteria as the average toilet seat.

Why? Well, the environment in your car is generally hospitable to these tiny lifeforms. These bacteria and fungi can live in a wide range of temperatures, and are happy to feed on just about anything that decays. They’re far more likely to be found in older vehicles, and vehicles in which children are regularly transported. How to Wash A Car

With winter finally fading into better weather, many of us emerge from hibernation and go outside to start performing our good weather tasks. We cut the lawn, tend our gardens, and wash our cars.

Here are some tips from our extensive experience you can use to keep your car looking fabulous, and to prevent the hand-washing process from scratching your trim and dulling your paint.

The enemy of your car’s beautiful finish is grit. The same dirt that makes your car look bad becomes an abrasive during the washing process.

Make Sure Your Car And Tools are Wet

Use the hose to completely soak down any area of the car that you’re cleaning before your start. By coating the surface with water, you’re making it possible for particles to “float” above the surface of the paint, so that you can wash them away.

Start with The Dirtiest Bits

Wash the parts of your car that have the most grit on them first – the wheels, wheel wells, and the bumpers are traditionally the areas that collect road particles. Use separate tools to clean these areas.

Keep Your Tools Clean

Your wash mitt or towel can pick up abrasive particles. Make sure you thoroughly clean your wash tools before starting, and any time you suspect that some dirt might have become embedded.

Use Two Buckets

Keep a separate bucket for rinsing your cloth or wash mitt, so you don’t transfer as much dirt back onto the car from your soap bucket. It helps to use different colours or shapes, so you remember which bucket is which.

Rinse Without A Nozzle

Instead of spraying the car to rinse, do your final rinse without a nozzle. Reduce the pressure, and let the water “sheet” onto your car. It will run of more completely, and leave less drying work for you.

Blot Your Car Dry

Use a Microfibre cloth if you choose to dry your car, but don’t “rub” the cloth across the surface. Blot the water droplets away, and thoroughly wring out the cloth between blots.

Removing Pine Sap from Vehicles

If you’ve ever parked your car under a stand of pine trees while they’re dropping sap, you know that the stuff they drop is tenaciously sticky and hard to remove from your car.

All trees can leak sap, but pine trees are especially sticky. The properties of pine sap are such that it’s been used as the basis of many paint products for decades, and we commonly call the sap that drips from the trees “tar”, which isn’t exactly true, but does describe the stickiness of the situation.

Really, the only way to avoid getting your car covered with pine sap that doesn’t involve a chainsaw is to cover it, or park it somewhere else. Pine trees are most prone to dripping sap in the springtime, when warmer days cause it to start running, though insect damage can cause the tree to drip any time of year.

So what should you do if your car does get covered in sap?

Firstly, never let the sap sit for too long. It will attach itself heartily to your vehicle, and damage your car’s finish permanently. Never use a physical means (chipping with your fingernails, or scraping) to remove the sap bubbles – you’ll take clearcoat or paint with it.

You need a solvent to remove the sap that’s strong enough to get the job done, but not so strong you eat into the finish. Hand sanitizer works very well – it contains enough alcohol to do the job, and its gel texture makes it easy to target the sap stain. Apply it with a fingertip or the corner of a cloth, wait a couple of minutes for it to act, and then wipe gently with a soft cloth. Note that the alcohol will remove wax too, so you’ll have to wash and wax your car after removing the tree sap.
